EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Maryland’s open tournament wrestlers turned in a solid day at the 2017 Warriors Winter Open hosted by East Stroudsburg on Sunday, February 12. The Terps had five placers overall, highlighted by second place finishes from freshman Brandon Cray (125) and redshirt freshman Jahi Jones (157).
Cray finished his tourney unbeaten at 125 pounds, winning twice. He beat Ryan Hetrick (West Point Army Prep) 6-1, then knocked off Gage Curry (American) 3-2 in the semis. Cray opted to medical forfeit the final to finish second. Fellow freshman Alex Vargas took home a fifth place finish at 125, going 2-1 overall on the day. He pinned Hetrick in the first period to cap off his day on the mat.
Jones rattled off three decision victories to claim second at 157 pounds, first knocking off Anthony Wokash (American) 7-5 in his opening match. The Fort Washington, Md. native then put away Shane Jones (Old Dominion) 1-0 to punch his ticket to the semis, where he won a high scoring 12-9 decision off of Nigel Ruiz (Army).
Redshirt freshman Garrett Griffith secured a fifth place finish at 165, which included a tech fall over Gary Eakin (Navy Prep) in wrestle backs. Freshman Spencer Woods took fourth at 174, beating Michael Carew (Shorter) by decision and Ethan Tursini (Army) in sudden victory.
Maryland wrestling will return to action on Saturday, February 18 with duals against Rider and Drexel.
