COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Men’s Basketball today announced its partnership with Sparta Science, a Silicon Valley company that applies data and technology to the pursuit of human resilience.

Through the partnership, Maryland Basketball is using the state-of-the-art Sparta platform to gain meaningful insight on how to improve student-athlete performance and reduce player injury risk. With Sparta, Maryland’s program can monitor force readiness and player health and maximize athlete potential through the Sparta Scan, which uses scientifically validated data models to quickly diagnose and track each athlete.

“In partnering with Sparta Science, we have been provided with meaningful information on how to best put our student-athletes in a position to be successful,” said Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon.

Sparta uniquely collects and analyzes foundational data on an athlete’s force patterns. This data set is combined with seven years of real-world data on associated performance and injury outcomes to produce a reliable, meaningful Sparta Scan, a qualitative, valid and reliable assessment of an athlete’s movement sequence. Furthermore, within the Sparta platform, Maryland is able to analyze this data alongside other metrics such as workouts, bar velocity, HRV, accelerometry, and game stats.  With Sparta and the Sparta Scan, organizations can eliminate guesswork to power fast, accurate decisions on athletes, their development and ongoing health and wellness.

“Partnering with Sparta has given us an objective understanding of the unique movement strategies utilized by each athlete,” said Maryland director of basketball performance Kyle Tarp. “It enables us to prescribe individualized and scientifically validated training protocols with the goal of creating well balanced and robust athletes. The Sparta software has also provided a platform for consolidation of all of monitoring data and streamlined communication throughout our basketball staff regarding the health and preparedness of players.”

“We are excited to partner with such an innovative and progressive program,” said Sparta’s Founder/President Dr. Phil Wagner. “Maryland Basketball’s evidence based philosophy matched up perfectly with our scientifically validated model to improve athlete resiliency.”
