COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Purdue won eight bouts, including seven straight from 141-197 pounds as the Boilermakers handed Maryland a 29-6 defeat Friday evening at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. Redshirt senior Billy Rappo (133) and sophomore Youssif Hemida both pulled off last-second wins for the Terps, as the team now moves to 2-10 (0-5 B1G) on the season. Purdue jumps to 8-2 (3-1 B1G).

Rappo clinched an exciting victory in the 133-pound match for the UMD, going to overtime to pick up a win over Luke Welch. Both wrestlers were getting shots in throughout regulation but neither could finish as the duo went to overtime tied 1-1. Welch managed to escape with three seconds on the board in the first ride out period, but Rappo made his move in the ensuing period with a reversal on Welch to seal a 3-2 tiebreaker decision.

Youssif Hemida kept his dual match win streak alive in the heavyweight match, avenging his prior defeat to Purdue’s Tyler Kral this season with a 3-1 victory. The duo wrestled another close match at XFINITY, with Hemida previously picking up a sudden victory decision at last season’s Big Ten Championships and Kral winning in TB-2 at last month’s Midlands Championships. This time it was Hemida who came out of top, as he took position on Kral with the clock winding down for his seventh consecutive dual win. The win moves the Mamaroneck, N.Y. native to 13-7 on the year and 8-4 in duals.

Maryland was on the losing end of back-to-back close matches at 157 and 165, starting with a narrow 6-4 sudden victory defeat for redshirt freshman Danny Boychuck (157) to Alex Griffin. Fellow redshirt freshman Josh Ugalde (165) also had a close call at 165, with a first period takedown from Dylan Lydy making the difference.

Bonus point wins at 149, 174 and 184 ultimately put the match out of reach for the Terps to give Purdue its fourth straight dual win. Maryland will return to competition on Sunday vs. #4 Ohio State at Good Counsel High School.
