EAST LANSING, Mich. – Maryland won five bouts Sunday against Michigan State, including a pin for redshirt sophomore Patrick Gerish (165), but it was not enough as the Spartans secured the team decision, 19-17. The Terps move to 2-9 (0-4 B1G) while the Spartans improve to 3-6 (1-4 B1G) with the win.

Gerish had the highlight moment for the Terps in the dual at Jenison Field House, winning his first Big Ten career dual match in style with a fall. The Fairfield, N.J. native had to battle from behind to get it, as MSU freshman Drew Hughes built up a 6-0 lead in the first period. Gerish got to his takedown in the second period, then caught Hughes in a headlock to put him on his back at 4:43. It was the first bonus point defeat of Hughes’ career, who entered the match 18-3 on the year.

Redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister (149) had a scare in the 149-pound match, and needed some late heroics to pull off a 6-5 decision win over Nick Trimble. Trimble got ahead 5-3 with a late third period takedown, forcing 15th-ranked Bannister to have to try and escape and score with 14 seconds left. The La Plata, Md. native did just that, hitting a single leg as the clock was winding down for his 12th win of the year by two points or under. Bannister now stands at 21-3 overall.

Redshirt senior Billy Rappo grinded out a tough 2-0 decision in the 133-pound match, using ride time and an escape to get a shutout win over Austin Eicher. Redshirt freshman David-Brian Whisler (197) and sophomore Youssif Hemida (285) ended the match on a high note for the Terps, both winning their matches by decision. It was the sixth straight dual victory for Hemida, who now improves to 12-7 on the season.

Two bonus point victories proved to be the difference for the Spartans, who picked up a major decision at 125 from Logan Griffin and a pin at 141 from 19th-rnked Javier Gasca.

Maryland will return to competition Friday, January 20 at the XFINITY Center Pavilion vs. Purdue.
