MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Redshirt sophomore Adam Whitesell turned in an impressive day at the Shorty Hitchcock Open, winning five matches en route to the 149-pound title Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Wade Hodges also had a solid day for the Terps at the event hosted by Millersville University, making it to the final of the 157-pound division.

Whitesell was a bonus point machine in the opening rounds, starting with a fall over Mason Rambarose of Sacred Heart in 1:47 in his first match. The Silver Spring, Md. native followed it up with a major decision win over Jon Errico (Penn), then pinned Felix Belga (Drexel) in 3:45 to punch his ticket to the semis.

Whitsell met Kennedy Monday (North Carolina) in the semis, and had to come from behind to secure the win in the third period. Down 4-0, Whitesell got a takedown in the final minute and turned it into a fall at 6:22 for his third pin of the day.

Whitesell then took on David Pipa (Lehigh) in the final in a back-and-forth match, using a takedown and two escapes in the third period to come out ahead with an 11-9 decision victory. Whitesell has now won 20 matches on the season, which includes a team-best eight pins.

Hodges put togetjer a three-win day in the 157-pound division to finish second overall. The Wauseon, Ohio native got his tournament started with an 18-1 tech fall win over Thomas Singley (North Carolina), then won convincingly in his quarterfinal match over Jordan Shinkus, 13-6. Hodges punched his ticket to the final with a 6-4 decision over Ricky Stamm (Hofstra), then went down to Justn Staudenmayer (Brown) in first place match.

Freshman Brandon Cray picked up two wins in the 125-pound division, including a fall and decision victory before being bounced to the consolation ladder.

Garrett Griffith (165) and Jahi Jones (157) were both two-match winners competing attached for Maryland. Jones posted two bonus point victories with a fall over Nigel Ruiz (Army) and major decision vs. Isaac Mcmillan (Army).

Maryland wrestling will be back in action January 15 vs. Michigan State in East Lansing.
