COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland gymnastics head coach Brett Nelligan announced the signing on five standout gymnasts on Wednesday. The class of 2017 features five exciting athletes who bring extensive talent and experience to the Terps.

“This may be the most talent we've ever had in one class," Nelligan said. "Individually, they have had incredible Junior Olympics careers. I can't wait to put them together and see what they can do."


AUDREY BARBER
Woodbridge, Va. • Apollo Gymnastics

Before Maryland: Member of the 2016 Junior Olympic National team ... placed third at the 2016 Junior Olympics on vault, fourth on beam, 12th on floor and fourth in the all-around ... 2016 Regional All-Around Champion ... selected to the Region 7 All-Star team and will compete in Germany ... three-time Junior Olympic national qualifier.

Nelligan on Barber: "Audrey can do it all. She has an explosive floor and vault along with beautiful lines and grace on bars and beam. She has the potential to be a top all-arounder."

 


KARRIE THOMAS
Coconut Creek, Fla. • American Twisters

Before Maryland: Member of the 2015 Junior Olympic National team ...uneven bar champion at Junior Olympic Nationals in 2015 while finishing fifth on floor and fourth in the all-around ... placed ninth on bars and beam at the 2016 Junior Olympic Nationals ... 2016 Florida State Bars and All-Around Champion ... four-time Junior Olympic National qualifier. 

Nelligan on Thomas: "Karrie is another top-ranked all-arounder. She can put up huge numbers on all four events. She really has no weaknesses, and her bars are among the best in the nation with loads of difficulty."

Holly Springs, N.C. • Sonshine Gymnastics

Before Maryland: Placed fifth in the all-around, fourth on beam and 10th on vault at the 2016 Junior Olympic Nationals ... bars, floor and all-around champion at 2016 Regionals while placing second on beam and fourth on vault ... 2016 North Carolina State Vault and Balance Beam Champion.

Nelligan on LeBlanc: "Emilie is another top-ranked all-arounder in this elite class. Emilie's poise on bars and beam are unmatched. Judges and fans will love to watch her as she makes everything look effortless."



COLLEA BURGESS
Woodbridge, Va. • Apollo Gymnastics

Before Maryland: Placed fifth on vault and 12th on floor at the 2016 Junior Olympic Nationals ... created a new skill on balance beam, called the "Burgess," at Nationals ... at 2016 Regionals, placed second on vault and fifth in the all-around ... 2016 Virginia State Floor Champion.

Nelligan on Burgess: "Collea is the definition of explosive. Her vault is high flying and her beam is full of difficulty. I think she will be a fan favorite on floor with her huge tumbling and high-energy dance."


SABRIYYA ROUSE
Apex, N.C. • Team Attraction Gymnastics

Before Maryland: Placed 13th in the all-around at the 2016 Junior Olympic Nationals ... placed third on floor and fifth in the all-around in the 2016 Regionals ... placed second on floor and fourth on vault at the North Carolina State championships ... two-time Junior Olympic national qualifier ... high school gymnastics team MVP in 2014, '15, '16 ... high school state champion in 2015 ... 2016 National Technical Honor Society member.
