COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Black team won four straight matches to end the day to secure a 17-14 win over the Red team at wrestle-offs on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore David-Brian Whisler (Black) capped off the day with a thrilling 6-4 sudden victory win over redshirt sophomore Garrett Wesneski (Red) in the 197-pound bout. The Black team secured wins in the three matches prior, starting with a 2-1 decision for redshirt sophomore Patrick Gerish (Black) over redshirt freshman Garrett Griffith (Red) in the 165-pound match.

Next in a battle of redshirt freshmen at 174, Sam Rowell (Black) came out ahead of Idris White (Red), scoring a late takedown to get the 7-4 decision. True freshman Spencer Woods (Black) turned in a solid performance against fellow freshman Niko Cappello (Red), rallying from a 4-0 deficit in the first period to win 6-4.

The Red team took advantage early, starting with a scrappy win for freshman Alex Vargas (Red) over fellow first-year grappler Brandon Cray (Black) at 125. After is was tied heading into a third, a reversal for Vargas turned the tides and he eventually sealed a 9-4 decision victory.

Redshirt junior Tyler Goodwin (Red) and redshirt senior Billy Rappo (Black) were both dominant in their matches, winning by technical fall. Rappo will be the presumed starter at 141 pounds early on this season with redshirt sophomore Alfred Bannister sidelined due to injury.

Redshirt junior Justin Alexander (Red) and redshirt freshman Jakob Restrepo (Black) treated the crowd at the XFINITY Center Pavilion to one of the closest matches of the day at 157. After remaining even through regulation and a round of sudden victory and rideouts, Alexander got the elusive takedown in SV-2 to get the decision. Danny Boychuck (Red) remained in control for most of the other 157-pound match, winning by decision 10-7. The 149, 184 and 285-pound weight classes were not contested.

The Terps will have their first opportunity to grapple with opposition in a hostile singlet on Sunday, November 6 when the team enters wrestlers in the Southeast Open and Clarion Open.
