Ganbayar Sanjaa enters his second season as a volunteer assistant at Maryland in 2016-17 after serving in the position at the University of Oklahoma for one season.
In his time with Oklahoma, He helped lead the Sooners to top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The team produced three All-Americans.
Sanjaa was a two-time All-American as a competitor at American University. Sanjaa placed sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2012 after a season that saw him go 25-6 at 157 pounds. He placed second at the Midlands Championships, participated in the NWCA All-Star Classic and finished third at the EIWA Championships.
In 2011, Sanjaa took fourth in the NCAA Championships after a 26-8 mark. He defeated four ranked opponents over the course of that season and took second at the Keystone Classic. Sanjaa also earned Academic All-American honors from the NWCA.
Before transferring to American, Sanjaa competed for Colby Community College and won the 2009 NJCAA National Championship and was a finalist in 2010. He was a two-time NJCAA Academic All-American and earned the Sportsmanship Award at the NJCAA National Tournament.
Sanjaa is also a 4x-time Mongolian Junior National Champion and Cadet National Champion. In 2005 he placed third at the Asian Junior Championships and in 2003 placed third in the Asian Cadet Championships. He received a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion in May from American.
Sanjaa has also wrestled for the Mongolian national team.
