Hello Terp Nation!
It’s Memorial Day weekend and around here in Maryland Athletics that also means another opportunity for our prominent lacrosse programs to compete for a national championship.
The Terps will take over Philadelphia as the women’s team – the top seed – will face Syracuse at PPL Park on Friday and the men’s squad – the No. 6 seed – faces Big Ten-rival Johns Hopkins at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday. We look forward to filling the City of Brotherly Love with lots of red as we continue to show the country that Maryland is truly “LaxU”. Congratulations to head coaches Cathy Reese and John Tillman, their staffs, and our incredible student-athletes for a tremendous year thus far and best of luck this weekend!
Also, good luck to our baseball team as they compete in their first-ever Big Ten baseball tournament. Coach John Szefc and his squad have racked up a school-record 36 wins during the regular season. The Terps face Michigan State on Wednesday at 10 p.m.
After her performance at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships, senior Thea LaFond was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year. Seniors Amber Melville and LaFond captured individual titles on the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships with Melville claiming victory in the high jump and LaFond capturing the triple jump title. LaFond’s weekend also included a third-place finish in the long jump.
Speaking of seniors, we are also very excited to celebrate the graduation of 85 student-athletes with an on-campus event Thursday afternoon. We couldn’t be more proud of the tremendous effort and commitment of these young men and women and wish them tremendous success as they become leaders in our local and global communities.
Please have a safe Memorial Day weekend and we hope to see you in Philly!
