COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Three gymnasts signed National Letters of Intent for the University of Maryland Gymnastics team, head coach Brett Nelligan announced today. Shynelle Agaran, Megan McClelland and Macey Roberts will begin competing for the Terps during the 2015-2016 season.

“We’re excited to welcome three new Terps to the Maryland Gymnastics family,” Head coach Brett Nelligan said. “We feel that all three possess the talent and dedication to achieve great things with us here at Maryland, both in the gym as well as in the classroom.”

All three signees are poised to contribute to the Terps, and are looking forward to taking the next step in collegiate gymnastics.

Shynelle Agaran, a Coral Springs, Fl. native, competes for American Twisters Gymnastics. In 2014, Agaran notched a national championship on beam, as well as a national runner-up finish on bars, placing second, at the Junior Olympic National Championships. Agaran finished 12th in all-around competition at the JO National Championships. In qualifying for the 2014 Junior Olympic National Championships, Agaran placed second on bars, third on beam and fourth in all-around at the 2014 regional qualifying competition.

Agaran also placed second on beam, third on vault, third on floor and second in all-around competition in the 2014 Florida State Meet. Rounding out her successful 2014 season, Agaran placed first on beam, floor and in all-around at the Sun and Surf Spectacular. At the Tim Rand Classic, she placed first on bars and first in all-around in 2013, and first on vault, first on floor and first in all-around during the same competition in 2012.

Outside the gym Agaran has earned the AP Scholar Award and currently ranks in the top ten percent of her class academically.

With Agaran’s impressive resume, Nelligan is excited for her grace and power to be brought to the GymTerps’ lineup. “Shynelle is the total package,” Nelligan said. “She has the grace and beauty needed for beam and bars and the raw power to be a force in the floor and vault lineup.”

A competitor for Southeastern Gymnastics, Megan McClelland earned a first place finish on bars at the 2014 Atlanta Crown Invitational as well as a second place finish on bars at the 2014 Lady Luck Invitational. The Rock Hill, S.C., native registered a first place finish on bars and third place finish in all-around at the 2014 Greensboro Invitational.

In 2013, McClelland notched a first place finish on floor and third place finish in all-around at The Gala. During the 2012 season she placed fifth on beam, seventh on floor, eighth on bars and eighth in all-around at the Level 10 regional competition. McClelland then went on the finish third on floor, fifth on beam, sixth on bars, and eighth in all-around in the 2012 Level 10 Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament.

In the classroom McClelland is a member of National Spanish Honors Society and ranks in the top ten percent of her class academically.

Nelligan is confident that Megan’s grace will quickly make her a fan favorite. “Megan is graceful beyond compare,” He said. “Fans and judges will love her, especially on both beam and bars.”

Rounding out the class is McDonald, Tenn., native Macey Roberts. A competitor for the Gymnastics Center of Chattanooga, Roberts tied for second on floor and placed fourth in all-around at the 2014 Level 10 Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament. At the Charleston Cup she earned first on vault, second on floor and third in all-around.

In 2011 and 2012 Macey was both a Tennessee State Champion and regional qualifier.

Outside the gym, Roberts was inducted into the National BETA Club and recently returned from a mission trip to Panama.

Nelligan’s anticipation of Roberts’ skill selection makes her a valuable asset to the team. “Macey is limitlessly talented and come to us with a multitude of options as far as skill selection. She can do just about any trick in the book,” He said.

Although the signees will not compete for Maryland until next season, there is plenty of excitement around this season’s team. The Terps start the 2014-2015 campaign on Friday, December 12th at 7 p.m. with the annual Red vs. Black intrasquad competition at XFINITY Center.
