Hello Terp Nation!
There is certainly a buzz around campus with everyone anticipating our first-ever Big Ten home football game against Ohio State this Saturday.
With our first sold-out crowd on hand since 2008 and our football team playing at a high level with a 4-1 record through five games, we are expecting an incredible atmosphere at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Saturday. There will be a ceremonial coin toss with Dr. Wallace D. Loh (President, Maryland), Dr. Michael V. Drake (President, Ohio State), Gene Smith (Director of Athletics, Ohio State), Steny Hoyer (Congressman, Maryland), Jim Delany (Commissioner, Big Ten), William Kirwan (Chancellor, Maryland) and myself. Be sure to arrive early!
We are excited to announce our overall football attendance is up 25 percent from the 2013 season, the largest overall increase among all schools in the Power 5 conferences. In addition, season ticket sales are up 25 percent from a season ago as well. We cannot begin to tell you how much we appreciate your support as we embark on our historic inaugural season in the Big Ten.
The evening prior to Saturday’s showdown, we will enshrine men’s basketball player Len Bias, men’s lacrosse player Bob Boneillo, track & field/football player Edward G. Cooke, field hockey and women’s lacrosse player Maureen ‘Bean’ Scott Dupcak, women’s lacrosse player Alex Kahoe, women’s basketball player Debbie Lytle, athletic trainer Sandy Worth and football player Charlie Wysocki as part of the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2014. This is a special moment to honor these great legends and our proud past.
Be sure to stay on the lookout for other exciting home events on campus as the fall schedule is well underway here in College Park. The volleyball team hosts Indiana and Purdue on Friday and Sunday, respectively, for its first home conference matches of the year at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. Women’s soccer welcomes Indiana this Sunday while the men’s side hosts local-rival VCU Wednesday before taking on Penn State Sunday, Oct. 12 in a live Big Ten Network match at Ludwig.
The No. 2 ranked field hockey team is set to battle Ohio State Friday in its first-ever home Big Ten contest at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps are 7-2 overall and will play host to the NCAA Final Four in November.
Both golf teams are back at it as well. Sophomore Victor Fox was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after a strong showing at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The women, under the leadership of first-year head coach Diana Cantu, showed much promise in a fourth-place showing at the Forest Oaks Fall Classic.
Cross country will head to its biggest meet of the season thus far this weekend when it travels to Lehigh for the Paul Short Invitational.
Happy October Terp Nation!
See you Saturday!
