COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team was tabbed the nation’s No. 1 team in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason poll released Tuesday. The Terrapins will start the year in the top spot for the sixth time in nine years.
Maryland received 22 first-place votes, while No. 2 North Carolina received eight. Connecticut, Duke and Syracuse round out the top five in order. Log on to NFHCA.org for the full Preseason poll.
Ten of the Terrapins’ 18 regular season games are against teams ranked in the preseason top 20. Five of Maryland Big Ten opponents appear in the rankings – No. 8 Penn State, No. 14 Northwestern, No. 16 Michigan State, No. 17 Michigan and No. 20 Iowa.
Coming off of its sixth straight Final Four appearance, Maryland will officially open the 2014 season Friday vs. No. 10 Massachusetts at 5 p.m. in the Conference Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. The Terps will take on Northeastern Sunday at 1 p.m. in their second game in the Conference Cup, before returning home to host No. 2 North Carolina Friday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
Tickets to the Conference Cup are $8 for adults and $5 for students (with student ID) and children under 14. Fans can purchase a $45 package for all four games of the Conference Cup that includes admission to a clinic Saturday hosted by Maryland and Temple.
