University of Maryland junior Thea LaFond advanced to the Women’s Triple Jump Final at the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland Monday.
LaFond, who is representing Dominica at the competition, recorded a season’s best 13.15 meters on her third and final jump to advance out of the qualifying round. The final will take place at 3:40 p.m. eastern time at Scotland’s national stadium.
A 2014 NCAA qualifier, LaFond fouled on her first attempt before leaping 13.13 m on her second jump. Jamaica’s Kimberly Williams is the top qualifier for the finals with a jump of 13.94 m.
LaFond will also compete in the Women’s High Jump event, which begins Wednesday.
The 20th iteration of the Commonwealth games comprises of 71 different nations and territories. It is held every four years for athletes from Commonwealth nations.
