B1G changes are underway for the Maryland volleyball program. With a new coaching staff and a challenging schedule on the horizon, the Terps are poised to take the program to new heights as it transitions into the Big Ten Conference. Follow along with our weekly installment of the Maryland Volleyball Summer Series as we take an inside look at the program leading up to first serve on August 29 against Elon.


Inside the Big Ten Conference

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to the depth and domination of Big Ten volleyball in 2013:

- 8 NCAA Tournament qualifiers

- 7 teams in the Sweet 16

- 4 teams in the Elite 8

- 2 NCAA Finalists

- 1 Champion

Just one day removed from officially joining the Big Ten Conference, the Maryland volleyball program is quickly preparing to join the toughest league in the nation. Let's take a closer look at the history of Maryland and Big Ten volleyball.


Maryland’s History With The Big Ten

  • Maryland is 18-50 all-time against current Big Ten competition
  • The Terrapins have met Penn State (6-17) and Rutgers (8-11) a combined 42 times
  • Maryland has never met Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern or Purdue in volleyball action

The Big Ten In The Big Dance

  • The Big Ten has captured six of the last eight National Championships, including five from Penn State
  • Five teams earned top-16 seeds in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, with seven advancing to the Sweet 16
  • Big Ten teams were a combined 23-7 in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, smashing the previous NCAA conference record (19)
  • 13 Big Ten players were selected as AVCA Division I All-Americans
  • Big Ten schools have captured nine National Championships -- all in the last 19 years
