The Maryland wrestling team was named a finalist for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and Elite Level Sports Marketing (ELSM) Best of Brand Gold Standard award.

In addition, head coach Kerry McCoy (@kmac120) and assistant coach Mike Catullo (@mikecatullo) were nominated for ELSM/NWCA Social Media of the Year (SMOY) Awards in the head coach and assistant coach categories, respectively.

The Gold Standard award, recognized as the highest honor in the Best of Brand Awards program, strives to highlight the college programs that have set a unique standard in marketing their programs in an innovative manner.

The Terps finished second to Chattanooga last season after winning the award for the 2011-2012 season. The other finalists are Chattanooga, Drexel, Iowa State, Johns Hopkins, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Princeton, South Dakota State, Stanford and Wayland Baptist.

From this group of finalists, three will be named as top programs at the NWCA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from August 1-3, 2014.  The winner will be honored at a Best of Brand breakfast that focuses on highlighting the unique branding efforts implemented by programs.

McCoy was nominated in the SMOY head coach category last season. It is Catullo’s first nomination. The SMOY awards were created to honor members of the college wrestling community who use social media to grow the sport.

The award is based on the quality of the finalists’ interactions with Twitter followers. There will also be a voting component, beginning in July, that will make up 30 percent of the criteria.
