Hello Terp Nation!
As the semester cools down on another memorable school year, Maryland athletics is once again heating up as we enter championship season. With both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams playing for Final Four bids and the baseball team headed to the ACC Tournament, it’s an exciting time to be a Terp!
But before I get to the upcoming schedule, I’d like to take a moment to recognize our incredible student-athletes and staff for their roles in the 2014 Terp Awards. Produced and directed by Carrie Blankenship, our athletic staff put on a tremendous show Tuesday evening as it showcased the best and brightest student-athletes and teams from the 2013-14 season.
From the comedic genius of Pat Cole (track & field) to the unforgettable segments of men’s soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski as the “Most Interesting Terp in the World,” this year’s edition of the Terp Awards was the best yet.
Still riding high from the Maryland spirit encapsulated in the Terp Awards, I am reminded just how special and talented the student-athletes of the University of Maryland truly are. Our student-athletes are why we do what we do, and they are proud representatives of the University of Maryland.
I encourage everyone to click this link to the view the award winners from this year’s Terp Awards.
It wouldn’t be approaching Memorial Day weekend in College Park if the Maryland men’s and women’s lacrosse teams weren’t competing for national titles. Such is the story again this season as both teams will play for Final Four bids this weekend.
The Terrapin men’s lacrosse team earned a thrilling 8-7 victory over Cornell last weekend to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals thanks to the late-game heroics of Mike Chanenchuk. The Terps will take on unseeded Bryant in Hempstead, N.Y. Saturday at noon for an opportunity to appear in their third Final Four in four seasons.
On the women’s side, the Terps cruised to a 13-5 victory over Penn last weekend on a trio of hat tricks from Kelly McPartland, Beth Glaros and Taylor Cummings. Maryland will play Duke Saturday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex with an eye on advancing to its sixth consecutive Final Four.
I’m also proud to recognize the recent success of the baseball team, which finished the regular season on a nine-game winning streak and has matched the school record for wins in a season (34). Under the guidance of head coach John Szefc, the Terps are poised to make their first appearance in the ACC Tournament since 2005 in Greensboro, N.C., May 20-25.
Congratulations are also in order for cornerback Dexter McDougle, who was recently selected by the New York Jets with the 16th pick of the third round in the 2014 NFL Draft. Additionally, Marcus Whitfield was signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Isaac Goins will have an opportunity to try out with the Miami Dolphins. Good luck, gentleman!
As always, thank you to our fans for your unrelenting support of Maryland athletics!
