PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Juliet Vongphoumy set a Maryland women’s golf program record, shooting 8-under par en route to a second place finish at the highly competitive Web.com Intercollegiate Tuesday at Marsh Landing Country Club.
Vongphoumy led the Terps, who captured fifth place in the tournament with a three-round score of 883, one stroke shy of fourth-place UCF. After posting a 295 and 290 in the first two rounds, Maryland capped the tournament with a 298 in third round play Tuesday.
“Juliet played the best golf I’ve seen her play this week. From top to bottom, everything was solid. To shoot three subpar rounds is very impressive and it goes hand-in-hand with the hard work she’s been putting in,” assistant coach Tiffany Prats said.
After recording a 69 and 68 in the first two rounds, Vongphoumy wrapped up Maryland’s regular season finale with a 71 in the third round to tie Alex Milan of Florida State for second place.
Emily Gimpel ended the tournament strong, recording a 72 on Tuesday to post a 222 for the tournament and tie for 31st. Freshman Alexandra Papell tied for 35th after tallying a 77 in the third round. The rookie posted a 73 in each of the first two rounds.
“We had our best finish of the spring this week coming off of our first full week of outside practice,” Prats said. “The girls had more confidence and played aggressive, smart golf. Everyone contributed this week which will be vital moving forward.
“We have so many positives to take away from this week and we hope to build on this momentum as we head to our final ACC Championship next week.”
Maryland travels to the ACC Women’s Golf Championship April 17-19 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
