COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has elected its new executive board for the 2014-15 academic year as announced today by senior associate athletics director Lori Ebihara.

Dani Kram (gymnastics) and Amy Dion (volleyball) were elected President and Secretary, respectively, while Noella Anyangwe (track & field), Shannon Bustillos (softball), Patrick Cole (track & field), Rob Galligan (baseball), Katie Gerzabek (field hockey), TJ Guidice (wrestling) and Malina Howard (women’s basketball) were named Vice Presidents.

“I’m really honored to be appointed by my peers as SAAC President,” Kram said. “Our efforts this year to promote the experiences of Maryland student-athletes really brought together all teams as one family. I’d really like to begin focusing on positioning our SAAC as leaders on campus, in the Big Ten and nationally.”

“We appreciate SAAC’s commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience at Maryland,” said director of athletics Kevin Anderson. “The committee has taken on responsibilities as leaders on campus and in our community, serving a vital role as the student-athlete voice within the athletics administration. The positive image that our athletic leaders portray is a strong reflection of the type of student athletes we have at the University of Maryland.”

SAAC is devoted to enhancing the student athlete experience at Maryland by developing leadership skills, promoting student athlete welfare and fostering a positive student athlete image on the Maryland campus, local area and in the nation.

“SAAC has taken an active role in community service on behalf of the University of Maryland this academic year,” Anderson said. “They have been at the forefront in raising money and awareness for charities in our local and national communities.”

The committee was involved in a number of civic engagements throughout the 2013-14 academic year, including a student athlete talent show raising money for the American Cancer Society, a Kids vs. Cancer volleyball tournament and turkey dinner distribution in the Baltimore community.

“In developing our five-year strategic plan – The Maryland Way – our vision was to prepare graduates to serve as leaders in the local state and global communities,” Anderson said. “Our Student Athlete Advisory Committee has embraced this idea through its relentless commitment to academics, athletics and community engagement.”

SAAC was also heavily involved from a leadership standpoint, highlighted by a meeting on campus with NCAA President Mark Emmert. Additionally, members participated in ACC and Big Ten SAAC meetings, provided input on NCAA proposed legislation and actively participated on Big Ten integration work groups.
