COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Candice Beards went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Maryland softball team to a doubleheader split with Syracuse Wednesday afternoon at the Maryland Softball Stadium. After falling in game one, 9-4, the Terrapins roared back to take the nightcap, 7-6.

“We just needed to make adjustments and we did that in the second game,” said head coach Laura Watten. “We forced Syracuse to make errors and we were just better all-around [in game two].”

Maryland next heads to Tallahassee, Fla. for a three-game series against nationally-ranked Florida State this weekend.

Game two: Maryland 7, Syracuse 6

Maryland capitalized on a six-run second inning and sophomore Madison Martin allowed just one run in four innings of work as the Terrapins secured a 7-6 victory in the second game of the day.

After Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a double by Alyssa Dewes, Maryland fired back in the bottom half of the inning when Beards led off with a single to right field. Beards advanced to third on a Corey Schwartz double to right field, and Erin Pronobis walked to load the bases for the leadoff hitter Amanda McCann.

McCann promptly singled to center field, scoring both Beards and Schwartz. After Bustillos walked to load the bases again, Lindsey Schmeiser came to the plate. In one of the wildest plays of the season, Schmeiser’s single to shortstop, combined with an error and poor decision making by the Orange, turned into a four-run play as she made her way around the base path. The ball never left the infield as the Terps took a 6-2 lead.

Syracuse fired back with three runs in the third, but Martin entered in the fourth and shut down the Orange to the tune of just three hits and one earned run in an excellent performance.

Martin ended up scoring the ultimate game-winning run in the fifth after sneaking home on a Pronobis dribbler to the pitcher.

Game one: Syracuse 9, Maryland 4

Beards posted two hits and a pair of RBIs as Maryland fell to Syracuse, 9-4, in the opening game Wednesday.

Brenna Nation and Syracuse’s Lindsey Larkin were locked in a pitcher’s duel through three innings before Syracuse connected on its first hit of the game in the fourth inning on a Julie Wambold double. Wambold scored Nicole Lundstrom to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.

The Terrapins returned the favor with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with a leadoff walk by McCann. After a Bustillos single to center, L. Schmeiser scored McCann with a single to left. Beards then knocked in a pair of runs with a clutch single up the middle.

Following a three-run fifth by the Orange to take a 4-3 advantage, Syracuse put the game out of reach on a grand slam by Jasmine Watson in the sixth inning.

Maryland scraped a run across in the sixth to cut its deficit to five, 9-4, but the rally ended as the Terps were shut down in the seventh.
