COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Hannah Dewey went 3-for-4 and junior Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless softball in relief as Maryland fell to LIU, 2-1, in the FAU “Strikeout Cancer” Tournament finale Sunday.
Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Erin Pronobis gave life to the Terrapins by reaching base on an error by the LIU catcher. Pronobis was out on a Lindsey Schmeiser fielder’s choice, but Amanda McCann singled up the middle to advance L. Schmeiser. Dewey then followed with a single of her own to chuck the bases, but neither Shannon Bustillos nor Kylie Datil could knock in the needed runs.
After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, the Blackbirds broke the deadlock with two runs in the top of the third inning. LIU pieced together four singles to do the damage. K. Schmeiser relieved Brenna Nation to get out of the jam.
Maryland answered with a run of its own in the fourth when Datil smacked her first career triple to right center field. Datil then took home after a balk by the LIU pitcher to cut the Terrapin deficit in half, 2-1.
K. Schmeiser notched six strikeouts to keep the Blackbirds off the scoreboard the remainder of the game.
