COLLEGE PARK, M.D. The Maryland women’s tennis team finished off its opening weekend with a decisive 5-0 victory over Richmond at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon.

Welma Luus punctuated Terps’ performance with a come from behind win against Anna Abadias. Maryland had already sealed the match at that point, getting strong individual performance from Olga Bredikhina, Olga Gaistruk and Olivia Gaudreault.

“We started a little bit slow on two courts, but in every match we turned it around and kept it up,” head coach Daria Panova said. “ We just kept getting better. The energy was up the whole time. Nothing was wrong.”

The match started at doubles where the Terps built on their success from the season opener against George Washington. Olga and her sister Nataliya moved down to No. 3 and did not miss a beat, scoring an simple 8-2 victory over Emily Sims and Denny Lamachia. In their debut at the No. 2 spot, Gaudreault and Alexandra Stanova clinched the point for the Terps with an 8-4 victory against Abadias and Katya Salas

In singles, three Terps quickly dispatched of their opponents to give Maryland the overall win. Olga Bredikhina finished first, rolling over Elizabeth Sims, 6-1, 6-0. Gaudreault wasted no time to give the Terps their third point, finishing off Kelsey Williams just after Bredikhina’s victory

Gaistruk then continued her strong form, taking out Brittany Boys, 6-2, 6-3. That set the stage for Luus. The South Africa native dropped the first set, but fought back to win the second stanza and ensuing 10-point breaker to take the match. Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan both had their matches halted after the outcome had been decided.

It’s the Terps second victory over Richmond in as many years. Maryland has also started 2-0 for the second straight season under head coach Daria Panova.

The Terrapins hit the road for the first time this season for their next match against Penn on Feb 1. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
