COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A pair of victories from the Terrapin Invitational and four wins in four different events in the first two weeks of the season have put the spotlight on Thea LaFond.
The accolades continued for the Terrapin junior this week with her being honored with the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week.
LaFond, a junior from Silver Spring, Md., won the women’s 60-meter hurdles and the women’s long jump recently at the Terrapin Invitational. That double followed wins the previous week in the triple jump and high jump at the Penn State Relays.
She was the national women’s performer of the week as honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association following the Penn State wins. Both her marks from that meet were the best in the nation on the opening weekend of the indoor track season.
LaFond currently ranks nationally among the top 10 in three events – fourth in the triple jump (42 feet, 2 inches), fifth in the high jump (5-11.25) and eighth in the long jump (20-2.50).
She is the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the pentathlon.
