Digital Media Guide
Maryland took Pittsburgh and North Carolina to the brink in five-set thrillers, but fell to both sides in heartbreaking fashion. The Terps look to close out the regualar season with a pair of wins this weekend.
The weekend was highlighted by the incredible defensive play of Ashlyn MacGregor, who tallied 24 kills in two matches. The freshman ranks second in the ACC and 22nd nationally with 1.37 block/s this season.
Senior Sarah Harper currently ranks third in the conference with 4.66 digs/s, while junior Ashleigh Crutcher is third (49th nationally) with 3.95 kills/s.
Scouting the Hokies
2013 Virginia Tech Hokies: 21-11, (9-9 ACC)
All-Time Series: Maryland leads, 11-10
The Hokies play Maryland for the second time this season after beating the Terps in five sets on October 6. Virginia Tech has lost three of its last four matches.
Virginia Tech has two of the top hitters in the ACC this season, as Victoria Hamsher ranks first in the conference in hitting percentage (.404) and Kathryn Caine is second (.339). The Hokies also have the conference's leading server, Lindsey Owens, who is averaging 0.42 service aces/s.
Scouting the Cavaliers
2013 Virginia Cavaliers: 17-13, (10-8 ACC)
All-Time Series: Maryland leads, 37-21
The Terps look to sweep the season-series against the Cavaliers for the second consecutive season Saturday. Maryland defeated Virginia, 3-1, on October 4 with 16 kills by Mary Cushman and 24 digs by Sarah Harper.
The Cavs' Lauren Fuller is one of the best setters in the ACC, ranking second this season with 11.32 assists/s. Meanwhile, Tori Janowski ranks fifth in the conference with 3.68 kills/s.
Final ACC Match
Saturday's match against Virginia marks the Maryland volleyball team's final contest as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps were one of eight institutions to compete in the ACC in the conference's volleyball season in 1980, accumulating a record of 23-20.
The Terps captured four regular season ACC titles ('90, '96, '97, '05) and four tournament titles ('90, '96, '03, '04) during their tenure. Among the most notable moments was when Maryland shocked the ACC in 2004 by claiming the conference tournament crown after finishing seventh in the regular season with a 7-9 record.
Maryland had three ACC Players of the Year (Colleen Hurley '90, Daune Koester '96, Eden Kroeger '97), four ACC Tournament MVPs and 45 All-ACC selections.
Digs Record Broken
With her 14th dig in the third set against Wake Forest on November 10, senior Sarah Harper became the Maryland volleyball team's all-time leader in digs. Harper surpassed Nicole Lantagne's record of 1,668 digs, which had stood since 1993. Harper currently has over 1,700 digs.
The historic milestone achievement put a bow on a fantastic Senior Day for Harper, Mary Cushman and Carlisle Abele. Harper was presented with a shovel after the game by head coach Tim Horsmon amidst a standing ovation from the crowd.
MacGregor Moves Up Block Charts
Freshman Ashlyn MacGregor has steadily climbed the ACC's blocking charts this season, moving into second in the conference with 1.37 blocks/s. She is averaging 1.41 block/s in ACC play.
The rookie was excellent at the net last weekend, tallying a career-high 12 blocks against Pittsburgh. MacGregor then matched the mark with 12 blocks against UNC two days later.
Sophomore Kelsey Hrebenach tallied 12 blocks (1s, 11a) in the Terps' four-set victory over Virginia, becoming the first Maryland player to accomplish the feat since 2011. The mark is tied for the highest this season in the conference for a four-set match.
Maryland had 31 blocks as a team on the weekend, including 18 against Virginia. The 18 blocks is a season-high for the Terps.
Freshman Ashlyn MacGregor was named ACC Freshman of the Week for career-best efforts against Virginia and Virginia Tech in October. It is MacGregor's first career conference honor.
The freshman had a memorable weekend at the net, hitting at a .447 clip with 20 kills and 11 blocks over the course of two matches. MacGregor's 12 kills against Virginia Tech were a career-high.
Tim Horsmon is in his sixth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team and earned his 300th career victory against Georgia Tech earlier this season. All three coaches in Maryland volleyball history garner at least 300 career victories.
Senior Mary Cushman eclipsed 1,000 career kills against UMKC on September 6, joining an elite club of Maryland volleyball players. The senior outside hitter finished the weekend with 33 kills and earned tournament MVP honors the following weekend. She is one of just eight players in Maryland history to record at least 1,100 kills and 600 digs.
