Scouting the Terps
2013 Maryland Terrapins: 13-13, (5-9 ACC)
Digital Media Guide
Maryland closed last weekend's action in dramatic fashion as it dominated Wake Forest with a 3-0 victory on Senior Day. The match was made even more special as senior Sarah Harper became the program's all-time digs leader in the third set with her 14th dig of the match. Harper was honored with a standing ovation following the match from a fantastic Maryland crowd.
The Terps spread out their offensive attack againt Duke and Wake Forest last week between Ashleigh Crutcher (20 kills), Mary Cushman (19 kills) and Adreene Elliott (18 kills). The offense continues to run through Crutcher, however, as the junior led the Terps with 64 total attacks.
Maryland holds steady as one of the strongest blocking teams in the ACC, as it currently ranks second with 2.82/s. The success can largely be attributed to freshman Ashlyn MacGregor, who has been a defensive stalwart at the net for the Terps. MacGregor currently ranks second in the conference with 1.31 blocks/s after an eight-block performance against Wake Forest.
Scouting the Eagles
2013 Boston College Eagles: 8-18, (0-14 ACC)
All-Time Series: Maryland leads, 12-6
Last Meeting: 10/20/13, MD (3-0)
Last BC Win: 9/7/12 (3-1)
The Terps hope to sweep the season series with Boston College for the second time in the last three years. The Eagles have yet to win a match in conference play this season, currently sitting at 0-14 (8-18 overall).
Boston College came close to picking up its first conference win last weekend when it fell to both Notre Dame and Syracuse in five sets. The Eagles squandered a 2-0 lead to the Irish, culminating with a heartbreaking 17-15 loss in the decisive fifth set.
Katty Workman has been the offensive brightspot for the Eagles this season, as she ranks fifth in the ACC in kills with 3.74/s. The sophomore led all players with 22 kills in addition to eight digs in the team's most recent outing against Syracuse.
Scouting the Orange
2013 Syracuse Orange: 13-13, (8-6 ACC)
All-Time Series: Maryland leads, 9-7
Last Meeting: 10/18/13, 'Cuse (3-0)
Last Maryland Win: 9/6/02 (3-0)
Maryland looks for revenge Sunday afternoon after falling to Syracuse in straight sets earlier this season on October 18. That Orange victory has since sparked an incredible 7-1 run in conference play after beginning the season 1-5 in the ACC.
Syracuse ranks 14th in the conference in kills (12.06), but ranks fifth with a .245 hitting percentage.
The Orange are led offensively by the two-pronged attack of Silvi Uattara (4.02 kills/s) and Nicolette Serratore (3.34 kill/s). Uattara has tallied double-digit kills in nine consecutive games dating back to October 13.
Digs Record Broken
With her 14th dig in the third set against Wake Forest Sunday, senior Sarah Harper became the Maryland volleyball team's all-time leader in digs. Harper surpassed Nicole Lantagne's record of 1,668 digs, which had stood since 1993. Harper currently has 1,671 digs.
The historic milestone achievement put a bow on a fantastic Senior Day for Harper, Mary Cushman and Carlisle Abele. Harper was presented with a shovel after the game by head coach Tim Horsmon amidst a standing ovation from the crowd.
With her 10th and final kill against Miami, senior Mary Cushman surpassed Elizabeth Efron ('95-'97) for fifth all-time on the Maryland career kills list. Cushman currently has 1,231 kills to her name.
If Cushman continues to collect kills at her current rate, she will likely finish fourth all-time in Maryland history.
Sophomore Kelsey Hrebenach tallied 12 blocks (1s, 11a) in the Terps' four-set victory over Virginia, becoming the first Maryland player to accomplish the feat since 2011. The mark is tied for the highest this season in the conference for a four-set match.
Maryland had 31 blocks as a team on the weekend, including 18 against Virginia. The 18 blocks is a season-high for the Terps.
Freshman Ashlyn MacGregor was named ACC Freshman of the Week for career-best efforts against Virginia and Virginia Tech in October. It is MacGregor's first career conference honor.
The freshman had a memorable weekend at the net, hitting at a .447 clip with 20 kills and 11 blocks over the course of two matches. MacGregor's 12 kills against Virginia Tech were a career-high.
Tim Horsmon is in his sixth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team and earned his 300th career victory against Georgia Tech earlier this season. All three coaches in Maryland volleyball history garner at least 300 career victories.
