The Maryland women’s tennis team travels to Charlottesville for the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, which begin Friday at the University of Virginia.

The five-day event will help determine who advances to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November. The winner of each draw will be granted an automatic birth into that tournament.

The Mid-Atlantic regional will be the Terrapins’ third event of their 2013 fall schedule. The Terps started the fall with the Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia before taking the court at the Wake Forest Invite in Winston-Salem.

This weekend marks the return of redshirt junior Welma Luus. The native of South Africa took the court for the first time in over a year in Philadelphia, but missed the trip to Wake Forest. Luus is also playing field hockey, and has tallied three goals in 11 games for Missy Meharg’s top-ranked squad.

Freshmen Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan join Luus as the Terps’ direct entrants into the main singles draw. Stanova will also team with Luus in doubles. The pair is the No. 9 seed and received a first round bye.

Hovsepyan made the semifinals of the A singles bracket at the Cissie Leary and looks to continue that success in her second taste of college action. Hovespyan will team with fellow rookie Cassandre Thebault in doubles. The tandem went 2-1 in Philadelphia.

Thebault leads the Maryland contingent fighting for spots in the main singles draw. Olga Bredikhina and Nataliya Bredikhina will also attempt to qualify and must reach the last eight of the qualifying bracket to do so.

The Bredikhina sisters will also team in doubles. The pair has accumulated four victories this season.

ACC foes Virginia and Virginia Tech are among the schools represented at the event.
