Maryland Impresses in Fall Ball Action

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland softball went unbeaten to open its fall slate last weekend, twice defeating Coppin State in addition to CCBC and College of Southern Maryland. The Terps dominated the action, winning by a cumulative score of 58-7 over the course of four contests at Robert E. Taylor Stadium.

“We had a great weekend all around, and we were able to assess and learn a lot about our true strengths as well as our opportunity areas,” said head coach Laura Watten. "I was especially happy with the play of our newcomers and freshmen. They were all very productive and played with confidence and composure, which is key to our growth and improvement as a program."

Looking to gain experience and expose its newest players to situational play, Maryland held College of Southern Maryland hitless with a 24-0 victory in the first game. Bridget Hawvermale, Candice Beards and Kylie Datil were lethal at the plate, combining for 11 hits and 12 runs scored. Hawvermale knocked in five runs, as the Terrapin pitching staff combined for a no-hitter.

In the following game against Coppin State, Maryland’s Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched six strong innings to lead the host Terrapins to an 8-2 victory. Freshman Hannah Dewey broke the game wide open, 6-2, with a three-run home run in the sixth, before the Terps tacked on two more runs to seal the game.

Redshirt freshman Brenna Nation was lights out on the mound against CCBC, pitching a complete game shutout to lead the Terrapins to a 19-0 victory. Dewey’s hot bat was evident in the win, notching five RBIs and three runs on three hits, while Erin Pronobis tallied three RBIs.

Maryland it fell behind early on a home run in the first inning in its seocnd game against Coppin State, but the Terrapin bats came alive in the fifth inning to the tune of four runs. Coppin tied the game at four, but the Terps regained control of the game in the sixth with some clutch hitting by Shannon Bustillos. Beards and Bustillos each had a pair of RBIs in the contest to guide Maryland to a 7-5 victory.

Maryland will complete its fall schedule this weekend as it hosts a round robin with Bowie State, Mount St. Mary’s, George Washington and Howard at Robert E. Taylor Stadium in College Park, Md.
