Terps in Third After 36 Holes at Starmount

The Maryland women’s golf team will head into day two of the Starmount Classic in third place after a stellar first round performance Monday.

The Terps led the way after 18 holes, boasting a 288. Heidi Baek paced Maryland with a 70 in the first round. Emily Gimpel and Juliet Vongphoumy followed Baek with a 71 and 72, respectively. Freshmen Alexandria Papell (75) and Panitta Yusabai (78) also helped Maryland to its early-tournament success.

Maryland fell behind Chattanooga and Campbell with a 302 on the second 18.  Gimpel, Vongphoumy and Yusabai all recorded a 75 to lead the Terps in the second round. Baek and Papell followed with a 77 and 80, respectively.

Jessica Gregory leads all golfers entered individually. Gregory, who is tied for eighth place, tallied a 75 and a 70 for a 145 overall tally Monday.

The Terps look to regain the top spot beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday morning.
