COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two-time ACC Player of the Year Alyssa Thomas of the Maryland women’s basketball team has accepted an invitation to USA Basketball’s mini-camp Oct. 4-6 in Las Vegas, Nev. Thomas is one of just six college players invited out of 30 total.
The event will be held at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion practice gym. Members of the 2014 World Championship Team and 2016 Olympic Team will be selected from the pool chosen at the mini-camp.
Thomas led the ACC in scoring (18.8 per game), rebounds (10.3 per game), and assists (5.3 per game). She is the only player in NCAA or WNBA history to average over 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game for a season. Thomas was named a WBCA Division I Coaches All-American for the second straight season.
The successful USA National Team program, which has won five-straight Olympic gold medals, three of four FIBA World Championship gold medals, will compete in the 2014 FIBA World Championship (Sept. 27 - Oct. 5 in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey), and if the USA qualifies, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games (Aug. 5 - 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
