Terps Prepare to Host Mason, UNH and Villanova

The Maryland volleyball team concludes its home tournament slate this weekend with the second Maryland Invitational at Comcast Pavilion as the Terps play host to George Mason, New Hampshire and Villanova.

Action begins Friday at 5 p.m. with Mason and 'Nova kicking off the tournament. The Terps and Wildcats face off at 7:30 p.m. The tournament continues on Saturday for Maryland against George Mason at 1:30 p.m., and the weekend wraps up against Villanova at 7:30 p.m.

Maryland (5-1) is looking to build off the momentum of a 3-0 weekend in the first Maryland Invitational. The Terps came from behind to defeat UMKC, 3-2, on Friday, before sweeping LIU Brooklyn and knocking off Penn in four sets on Saturday.

Scouting the Terps

Maryland is looking for its third straight tournament title after winning the season-opening GW Invitational and the first Maryland Invitational. Last weekend, the Terps went 3-0 in their home debut. After falling behind 2-0 against UMKC on Friday, the Terps rallied to win 3-2. On Saturday, Maryland swept LIU Brooklyn and defeated Penn, 3-1.

Sarah Harper earned tournament MVP honors with an outstanding performance along the backline. Harper, Maryland's single-season digs leader, recorded 76 digs in the three matches averaging 6.33 per set. The senior leads the ACC in digs averaging 5.78 per set and ranks fifth nationally.

The strong defense was not just limited to Harper. As a team, Maryland totaled 44 blocks averaging 3.67 per set. Ashlyn MacGregor led the way totaling 23 and averaging 1.92 per set. The freshman is totaling 1.43 blocks per set on average this season, which is good for third in the conference.

Catie Coyle, Adreené Elliott and Emily Fraik all averaged at least 1.00 block per set in the three matches. On the season, the Terps get 2.83 blocks per set, tops in the ACC and 16th nationally.

Elliott led the attack last weekend with 41 total kills with an outstanding .438 hitting percentage to earn all-tournament honors. Elliott was joined by Mary Cushman and Ashleigh Crutcher as offensive forces. Cushman, an all-tournament selection, averaged 2.75 kills per set, while Crutcher averaged 3.25.

Scouting the Patriots

2013 George Mason Patriots: 2-6

Mason lost three of four matches at the Patriot Invitational last weekend. After opening with a four-set win over Coppin State, the Patriots dropped three consecutive matches to Princeton, Radford and Temple.

Senior outside hitter Lana Zonjic was named to the all-tournament team while redshirt sophomore Lolade Owokoniran was selected as the tourney's Best Blocker. She leads a Patriot effort that ranks fourth in the nation in blocks per set (3.23).

2013 New Hampshire Wildcats: 5-3
2013 Statistics

New Hampshire went 2-1 at the Holly Young Invitational last weekend with wins over Brown and St. John's, and defeated Bryant in three sets in a midweek matchup on Tuesday.

The Wildcats are averaging 11.61 kills per set led by Morgan Thatcher (3.14). At the Holly Young Invitational, Taylor Dunklau and Tori Forrest earned all-tournament honors.

2013 Villanova Wildcats: 2-4
2013 Statistics

Villanova dropped two matches in Lincoln over the weekend - one to the host Huskers and another to Southern Miss. The Wildcats bounced back with a four-set win over Lehigh on Tuesday.

Lauren Carpenter and Claire Crutchfield are the squad's top attackers. Carpenter is averaging 3.00 kills per set, while Crutchfield is averaging 2.79. Emma Pettit runs the offense is dishing out 10.46 assists per set.

Early Returns

After two weekends of action, Maryland leads the ACC in two statistical categories and ranks highly in opponent hitting percentage along with several individual standouts.

The Terps lead the conference in blocks (2.83 b/s) and diggs (15.91 d/s). Leading the charge defensively is Ashlyn MacGregor (1.43 b/s), who ranks third in blocks and Sarah Harper (5.78 d/s), who leads the league in digs.

Maryland's strong defensive prescence this season has held opponents to a .092 hitting percentage, which is second olny in the ACC to NC State's .085.


As part of Sarah Harper's 76 digs last weekend, the senior set a career high with 34, six shy of the single-game program record, against UMKC on Friday. That total is the most by a player in the ACC this season. In addition, her 19-dig performance against George Washinginton in the season opener is the second-most in the league in a three-set match.

Reaching 1,000

In the third set against Penn on Saturday night, Mary Cushman eclipsed 1,000 career kills. The senior outside hitter finished the weekend with 33 kills and now has 1,008. Cushman is closing in on Maria DiLivio for 10th all-time (1,022).

Record Watch

With her performance over the weekend, Adreené Elliott raised her career hitting percentage to .314, which is tied for third all-time with Shantelle Johnson. Rachel Wagener holds the record with a .341 hitting percentage.

Libero Sarah Harper has 91 career service aces, one shy Conya Jabari-Kitwala for 10th all-time.

Harper passed Sarah Treadwell for sixth on the all-time digs list. The senior now has 1,328 digs one shy of Carey Brennan for fifth (1,329).

Fresh Faces

Alex Brown and Jessica Ward made their Terrapin debuts during the Maryland Invitational. Brown made her collegiate debut against LIU in the first game on Saturday, while Ward appeared against Penn in the tournament finale.

Along with Julia Anderson and Ashlyn MacGregor, the Terps have debuted four new members of the 2013 squad.

Head Coach Tim Horsmon

Tim Horsmon is in his sixth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team. Horsmon has 296 career victories in his 15 seasons as a head coach.
