Terps Earn a Split at GW Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C.   Senior Mary Cushman and junior Ashleigh Crutcher each recorded double-doubles as the Maryland volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Ole Miss, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the first of two games at the Charles E. Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University.

In the evening session, the Terps (2-1) fell to UMBC, 3-0. Depsite the loss, Maryland won the GW Invitational with Crutcher being named the tournament MVP. Junior Adreené Elliott and senior Sarah Harper earned spots on the all-tournament team.

Against the Rebels, Cushman led the Terps with 13 kills and added 11 digs, while Crutcher had 12 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Amy Dion tallied 24 assists and Harper had a team-high 22 digs.

After the Rebels took the opening two sets, Maryland started its comeback with a 25-19 win in the third frame. With the Terps leading 22-19, Maryland closed it out behind kills from junior Elliott and sophomore Emily Fraik, and an ace from Cushman.

In the fourth set, Maryland trailed by as much as eight, but rallied to tie the match at 21 on an Ole Miss error. Three straight kills, two from Fraik, gave the Terps set point. After the Rebels cut the deficit to two, Fraik sent it to the fifth set with a kill.

In a tight fifth set, Maryland broke a 9-9 tie and scored six of the next eight points capped by Crutcher’s 12th kill of the match to seal the Maryland win.

Against the Retrivers, Crutcher recorded 18 kills with Elliott adding 13 in the loss.

The Terps are back in action on Friday as they open their home slate against UMKC at 7:30 p.m. at Comcast Pavilion.
