COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  Brooke Cabrera, Ali McEvoy and Sarah Sprink of the Maryland field hockey team were voted by their teammates as tri-captains for the 2013-14 season Wednesday.

Cabrera, a redshirt junior, will help with off the field team chemistry and leadership. McEvoy, a senior who was recently named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, has started throughout her career for the Terrapins’ defense. She and Sprink will help lead the Terps on the field. Sprink will serve as the Terrapins’ liaison with officials as NCAA field hockey moves into using a referral system.

“This is a great spectrum of people,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “When we talked about captaincies, there are other women that are certainly ready to be captains, but these three will work well in different areas. With us beginning to incorporate referrals, we have an officials captain and Sarah Sprink will serve that role. Ali McEvoy will be our on-field captain and the two of them will work with that.”

“Then we have Brooke Cabrera. It’s really important in a college setting to have a captain that’s like the chief. A chief for off the field and on the field, who knows what’s going on with everyone and is generally very compassionate and straightforward. These three are a great combination.”

The Terrapins return eight of 11 starters from last year’s Final Four team. In 2012, Maryland went 18-6 and advanced to its fifth straight Final Four and 15th under Meharg.

The Terps will officially open the 2013 season at noon Saturday vs. New Hampshire in Temple’s Conference Cup in Philadelphia. Maryland will play either Ohio State or Temple Sunday, Sept. 1. Live stats for both of the Terps’ games will be available at Admission is $8 for a two-day pass, $5 for a single-day ticket and children 12 and under are free.
