GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seniors Ali McEvoy, Jill Witmer and junior Maxine Fluharty were voted to the 11-member Preseason All-ACC Team Thursday by the league’s seven head coaches. The Terrapins led the league with three honorees.
Witmer, a three-time All-ACC honoree, was voted to the team for the second time in her career. McEvoy, also an All-ACC honoree, is honored on the Preseason All-ACC team for the first time in her four years. This is Fluharty’s first honor from the conference. Virginia and North Carolina each have two honorees on the Preseason All-ACC Team.
The Terrapins received 31 votes and one first-place vote. Duke was picked to finish third with 23 votes, followed by Syracuse, Wake Forest, Virginia and Boston, respectively. North Carolina was picked to win the conference with 36 overall votes.
Maryland will play an exhibition match at Penn State Friday at 5 p.m. The Terrapins will return home for their annual Red/White scrimmage Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. All fans are welcome Sunday and admission and parking are free.
The Terrapins return eight of 11 starters from last year’s Final Four team. In 2012, Maryland went 18-6 and advanced to its fifth straight Final Four and 15th under Meharg.
The Terps will officially open the 2013 season vs. New Hampshire in Temple’s Conference Cup in Philadelphia Aug. 31 at noon. Maryland will play either Ohio State or Temple Sunday, Sept. 1.
