COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland field hockey team will play an exhibition match at Penn State Friday at 5 p.m. The Terrapins will return home for their annual Red/White scrimmage Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. All fans are welcome Sunday and admission and parking are free.
“We’re very fortunate to have so many players that have had so much hockey in their lives since January,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “The temperament and level of performance in the training sessions has been really high, which makes it really exciting. We’re really impressed in the amount of players that are able to play on different lines.”
“Fortunately, we’ve had two intrasquad scrimmages so far and we’ll get an opportunity to go up and play at Penn State. It’s nice for the women to go to Penn State, since in a few years we will be making that trip more. We’re going to give everybody a look and an opportunity to play on Friday. I’m sure we will gain ground and get prepared for our Red/White game Sunday.”
The Terrapins return eight of 11 starters from last year’s Final Four team. In 2012, Maryland went 18-6 and advanced to its fifth straight Final Four and 15th under Meharg.
Penn State went 17-3 in the 2012 season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions won the Big Ten for the second straight season.
The Terps will officially open the 2013 season vs. New Hampshire in Temple’s Conference Cup in Philadelphia Aug. 31 at noon. Maryland will play either Ohio State or Temple Sunday, Sept. 1.
