Having helped build the Maryland wrestling program into a national contender, head assistant coach Todd Beckerman has been tabbed as the head coach at Brown University as announced Friday.
In Beckerman’s eight seasons as an assistant, five under head coach Kerry McCoy, the Terps have routinely been ranked among the nation’s top teams. Beckerman has helped lead the team to four Atlantic Coast Conference titles including back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012.
Individually, the Terps have crowned 16 different conference champions including six champions who trained directly with Beckerman: three-time ACC champion Steven Bell (2008-10, 133 pounds), two-time champions Jon Kohler (2008 and 2011, 141 pounds) and Alex Krom (2009-10, 141 pounds), Brendan Byrne (125 pounds, 2009) and Andrew Schlaffer (2006, 149 pounds).
"It's an awesome opportunity and I'm really excited for him," said McCoy. "Obviously, it's bittersweet because he means so much to the program and he's been here with me every season. But I'm excited for him and what he's going to bring to the table at Brown."
Beckerman will take over for Dave Amato, who announced his retirement after guiding the Bears’ program for the last 30 years.
A national search for a new assistant coach will begin immediately.
