COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team hosted its annual alumni events this weekend and joined with USA Field Hockey to host a retirement party for former Terrapin and two-time Olympian, Keli Smith Puzo Friday night.
"It was so amazing to see the legacy of Terrapin field hockey this weekend," head coach Missy Meharg said. "It was special to celebrate Keli's career with everyone. When I looked out at the field Saturday, I saw that every single woman had won an ACC and a national championship, which is so special for the Terps."
"What an incredible turnout we had this year for Keli Smith Puzo's retirement party and the alumni game," associate head coach and former Terrapin player Dina Rizzo said. "It's always so nice to have the alums back on campus to celebrate and connect with generations of Terps."
Maryland and USA Field Hockey hosted the party in honor of Smith Puzo's stellar playing career Friday at Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge in Annapolis. Smith Puzo was a member of the 1999 national championship team, won three ACC titles and played in the Beijing and London Olympics.
On Saturday, the Terrapins hosted an alumni event at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Fans, including longtime Terrapin supporters Joel Ryerson and Fran Markwith, were in attendance. Meharg was the play by play announcer, while current Terrapins coached the teams and officiated the game. Evan Beach, brother of former Terp Emily Beach and husband of Alicia Grater Beach, served as a goalkeeper, while equipment manager Jim Knight oversaw the grilling for the postgame tailgate. Parents Deb Leach and Kathleen and Kevin Fluharty were on hand to help as well.
The Terrapins would like to thank all that came out:
