VOLLEYBALL -- Michelle Kenning, So., OH, Cincinnati, Ohio
Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Kenning led the University of Maryland volleyball in kills in all three matches of the VCU Third Degree Sportswear Invitational last weekend in Richmond Va., earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Kenning posted 11 kills on .409 hitting in a loss to Central Michigan Friday while adding six digs. Kenning notched 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs in a loss to Liberty. In Saturday evening’s victory against VCU, Kenning recorded another 13 kills and assisted on the final two points of the clinching set. Kenning averaged 3.4 kills per set and 2.8 digs per set for the weekend.
After playing a reserve role last season at tailback and serving as the primary kick returner, Scott stepped into the spotlight Saturday. In his first career start, Scott rushed for a career-high 197 yards on 26 carries (7.6 ypc), surpassing his season totals of 2007 (14 for 135). The rushing yards mark hit a number of milestones: fourth-highest total in the nation during the first weekend of action, 16th on the school’s single-game chart, school record in a season opener and the most by a Maryland back since Bruce Perry galloped for 237 vs. Wake Forest in 2003. Scott netted 123 of his yards in the second half when the Terps held off a late Delaware rally.
