A 1999 All-American defender, Tonia Porras is a two-year starter for the Terps. "She's just a great, solid one-on-one defender," says Timchal. A strong player, she jumpstarts the attack with her strong transition game and blazing speed. She has been named a preseason College Lacrosse USA and LaxPower All-American.
As a junior in 1999: A starter and first-team Brine/IWLCA All-American, Porras also added a goal and six assists … scored in the Syracuse game (3/13) … her career-high two assists came against Georgetown (5/8) in the NCAA quarterfinals … controlled 32 groundballs, caused 22 turnovers, and had 24 draw controls.
As a sophomore in 1998: Named to the ACC all-tournament team … played and started in all 21 games … tallied one assist … picked up 30 ground balls and forced 26 caused turnovers.
As a freshman in 1997: Made an immediate impact as a freshman, playing in all 22 games, including the ACC championship game and the NCAA championship game …posted two goals and an assist in her first season wearing a Maryland uniform.
Before Maryland: Hails from Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio … a 1996 high school All-American … a four-year standout and captain in lacrosse and field hockey … helped guide Shaker Heights to a three-year, 55-0-3 record in lacrosse … a member of the league, region and state championship lacrosse team from 1994-1996 … also helped Shaker Heights' field hockey team capture the league, city and region titles all four years.
