Free Safety

On Williams: Former transfer who established himself as one of the top safeties in the league – if not the country – in his final two years at Maryland … started the 2003 season on the “watch list” for the Bronko Nagurski and Jim Thorpe awards … a physical, athletic force who has great versatility … is big enough to excel in run support yet fast and quick enough to man a corner position if the defense is in a nickel or dime package … one of three seniors and four returning starters in the Terps’ defensive backfield, the deepest unit on this year’s team … one of the hardest-working players on the team … an Iron Terp with a 36˝-inch vertical jump, 345-pound bench, 560-pound squat and 4.5 time in the 40-yard dash.

2003 (Senior): Started all 12 games at free safety ... a second team All-ACC selection ... tied for fourth in the ACC and the team lead with three interceptions ... third on the team with 81 tackles (59 solo) ... (at WFU) ... had a great game, tying a career high with 11 tackles (seven solo) along with one interception ... made a nice play by reading the play and stepping in front of a Demon Deacon receiver to make an interception in the third quarter ... ACC Defensive Back of the Week ... (at NCSU) ... recorded nine tackles (seven solo) and a PBU ... recovered a fumble caused by Leroy Ambush late in the fourth quarter that gave the Terps the ball for what was ultimately their game-winning drive ... PBU came with just seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as he leaped over several Wolfpack receivers to knock down a desperation pass by Philip Rivers ... (vs. UVa) ... finished with a career-high 11-tackles (seven solo) ... added a PBU as he hit a Virginia receiver when he touched the ball on an “out” route to the right side in the third quarter ... (vs. UNC) ... had five solo tackles ... (at GT) ... finished with seven tackles (six solo) ... rushed the QB on a key third-and-five play during the second quarter, as he hit Reggie Ball while he released the ball, forcing an incompletion and a Yellow Jacket punt ... (vs. CU) ... made his second interception of the season as he perfectly-timed his jump over the Clemson defender for the pick ... had great coverage on a play in the fourth quarter, recording his lone PBU of the game ... finished with six tackles (three solo) ... (vs. WVU) ... second on the team with eight tackles (five solo) ... had a PBU in the third quarter when he crushed the West Virginia receiver as soon as he touched the ball, forcing the incompletion ... (vs. The Citadel) ... had the Terps’ lone interception of the game on a leaping grab at midfield in the second quarter ... also notched two tackles (one solo) ... (at NIU) ... finished with six tackles, all solo ... recovered Curtis Williams’ blocked kick in the fourth quarter.

2002 (Redshirt Junior): A 14-game starter at free safety … a second team All-ACC selection in his first year in the league ... a third-team All-American by The Sporting News ... finished the season fourth on the team in tackles with 82 (61 solo) … also had four interceptions, seven pass breakups, two TFLs, one sack and two forced fumbles … (vs. NCSU) ... recorded nine tackles (eight solo) ... registered first career sack for a loss of four yards ... forced a fumble in the fourth quarter ... (at Duke) ... had eight tackles (five solo) ... had a third-quarter interception in the Maryland end zone to stop a Duke scoring chance off of a turnover ... (vs. GT) ... led the team with a career-high 10 tackles, all solo ... notched one TFL for one yard on a first-and-goal play at the UMD nine-yard line ... had four pass breakups ... (at WVU) ... had seven tackles (four solo), including several solid hits in the middle of the field ... had an interception on a tipped ball in the first quarter ... (vs. Wofford) ... had six tackles (five solo) ... had a bone-jarring hit on the sidelines that knocked the Wofford tight end out of the game ... (vs. FSU) ... made five total tackles, with four solos ... had first career fumble recovery in the fourth quarter when he fell on top of a muffed punt reception ... had one solo special teams tackle ... had one pass breakup ... (vs. Akron) ... pulled down two INTs in his home debut ... marked the first time since the 1999 a Terp had two INTs in a game (Shawn Forte).

2001 (Junior): Redshirt season … named defensive scout team Player of the Year (along with linebacker Ricardo Dickerson) for his work on the practice field

2000 (Towson): A nine-game starter at cornerback … finished the season with 42 tackles (32 solo) … also had two tackles for loss and 10 pass break-ups, third-most on the team … team defense held opponents to 155.9 yards per game passing … returned one punt for 22 yards.

1999 (Towson): Appeared in all 11 games including two starts … spent most of the season as a backup cornerback but two starts came at strong safety … made 53 tackles, had an interception, broke up seven passes and forced a pair of fumbles … had a career-high 10 tackles at Fordham.

High School: A 1999 graduate of DuVal High School in Seabrook, Md. … a two-year starter at cornerback … an all-county selection … also lettered in track and baseball … was a state qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles … high school coach was Henry Brady.

Personal: Madieu Mohamed Williams was born October 18, 1981 in Sierra Leone, West Africa … son of Abigail Burscher … majoring in family studies.
