Our commitment to The Maryland Way guides our efforts to helping student-athletes build a foundation for a successful life after intercollegiate athletics.  Guided by our focus on The Maryland Way, coaches, staff and faculty provide student-athletes with academic and athletic experiences which will help them to develop sound leadership skills, the ability to collaborate with others, and the confidence to persevere through life’s challenges.  Our goal is to prepare student-athletes for productive, successful lives after Maryland.  

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to providing Maryland student-athletes with a comprehensive Career Development program with the primary goal of best preparing them for life after Maryland in a competitive job market. The SWCD program has partnered with the University of Maryland's award winning Career Center and programming will focus on the following four (4) phases:

Phase I: Assessment

  • Self-assessment and prioritization of core values
  • Exploration of potential career/industry choices, targeting potential companies
  • Analyzing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) as related to potential career choices

Phase II: Preparation

  • Developing a resume and cover letter
  • Networking and building professional relationships

Phase III: Action

  • Internship search techniques
  • Job search techniques
  • Start thinking about applying

Phase IV: Transition

  • Evaluating available options
  • Making the transition from university to the professional work place

Spring Semester

Tuesday 2/4/2014 6:15pm-7:15pm University Career Center (Resource Room)

"Backpack to Briefcase"
This popular workshop is geared toward assisting student-athletes with preparation for the upcoming UMD Spring Career & Internship Fair.  Local employers will participate in a roundtable discussion where they will discuss topics including appropriate attire, networking skills, and what constitutes the desirable qualities of an ideal job applicant.  Student-athletes will be able to ask questions while participating in a mock networking session in order to prepare for the upcoming Employer Networking Event and Spring Career and Internship Fair.

Objective(s): Student-athletes should be able to identify three to five strategies that will better prepare them for successful participation in the upcoming events.

"Spring Career & Internship Fair"
The annual Spring Career & Internship Fair is a three-day event providing students and student-athletes an opportunity to meet face-to-face with employers to discuss possible internships as well as full and part-time employment opportunities.  Each of the three days will present different employers so student-athletes are encouraged to plan ahead in order to attend all three days.  Student-athletes should dress professionally while bringing multiple copies of their current resume. No preregistration is necessary.

Objective(s): To meet with at least five potential companies looking for interns or to hire full time employees.

“Employer Networking Event”
The University of Maryland, Department of Athletics, has partnered with the University Career, the Department of Fraternity Sorority life, and Veteran Student Life, to provide a unique opportunity for students and student-athletes to network with a wide variety of local, state, national companies. Student-athletes should dress professionally while bringing multiple copies of resumes. 

Objective(s): Student-athletes should be able to identity at least five companies of whom are looking for individual with their skill specific sets.

Tuesday 4/1/2014   6:30pm – 7:30pm University Career Center (Resource Room)

"Backpack to Briefcase"
This popular workshop will focus on the preparation of professional resumes, specifically targeting sophomore student-athletes.  Juniors and seniors are welcome to attend whom maybe seeking additional assistance with their professional resumes.

Objectives(s): Student-athletes will learn the value of a well-constructed professional resume.

Wednesday 4/9/2014 6:00pm – 8:00pm Comcast Center (Pavilion)

"Student-Athlete Career & Internship Fair"
Maryland Athletics has partnered with Athlete Connections to provide an exclusive student-athlete career and internship fair. Student-athletes will have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with a variety of corporate representatives to discuss internship as well as full-time employment opportunities.  All student-athletes are encouraged to attend.  Student-athletes should dress professionally while bringing multiple copies of professional resumes.

Objectives(s): Student-athletes should be able to identify a minimum of five companies seeking individuals for internships or full time employment.
