On Simon: One of the quickest players on and off the ball that plays on the Maryland squad … worked all summer on sharpening her skills … her proven experience and versatility enables her to contribute as a part of the Terps’ attacking midfield and defense … a complete student-athlete, achieving success both on and off the field … co-author of Maryland field hockey’s on-line journal, titled, “Inside the Circle.”

As a junior in 2001: A Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection for the first time in her career … breakout season as a starter, drawing the left defensive halfback assignment in all 24 games … contributed to a season-long defensive effort that held opponents to only 0.88 goals per game on 5.6 shots per game … also helped the Terrapins post 11 shutouts and sacrifice only 3.6 penalty corners per game … part of a defensive unit that allowed Kent State (Sept. 9) and Drexel (Oct. 28) zero shots and limited Virginia Commonwealth (Oct. 13), James Madison (Oct. 26) and Syracuse (Nov. 11) to only one shot … was credited with one assist on the season in the Terps’ victory over Drexel.

As a sophomore in 2000: Played in 19 games and served as a starting defensive back in seven games ... contributed to a season-long defensive effort that limited opponents to 1.2 goals per game and 6.5 shots per game … also helped the Terps post nine shutouts, including five against NFHCA top 20 rivals … scored first career points in the form of two assists in Maryland’s 7-1 win at Towson (Sept. 13) … part of a backfield unit that did not allow Delaware a shot in the Terps’ 8-0 win (Sept. 8) … part of a defensive performance that limited Towson to only two shots in Maryland’s 7-1 victory (Sept. 13) … a member of the NFHCA national academic squad … among 14 field hockey players listed on the 2000-01 ACC Honor Roll.

As a redshirt freshman in 1999: Success story who endured four major knee surgeries in order to continue her playing career … tore the meniscus in her right knee and endured a fourth knee surgery on Aug. 13 … returned to the playing field just over a month later against Towson on Sept. 15 … her first career game came against her sister (a Towson starter) … played in 10 games including Maryland’s ACC championship clinching victory over Wake Forest (Nov. 7) and the Terps’ first two NCAA Tournament games against Lafayette (Nov. 13) and Old Dominion (Nov. 14) … earned playing time in ACC games against Wake Forest (Sept. 25) and the ACC regular-season clinching Terps’ victory over North Carolina (Oct. 23).

As a freshman in 1998: Sat out the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during the final game of her high school career … endured eight months of rehabilitation which brought her into the preseason in 1998 and took a redshirt in order to work herself back into playing shape … tore the meniscus inside of her right knee on the first day of spring practice in March of 1999 … rehabilitated the knee from that injury and suffered the same injury only two days prior to the start of pre-season camp in 1999.

Before Maryland: A high school Mideast Regional All-American her senior season ... also named to the all-state, Baltimore Sun All-Metro and all-county teams her senior year ... all-state second team as a junior ... scored nine goals and credited with 11 assists as a senior ... a member of the silver medal winning team the 1996 AAU Junior Olympics ... member of the gold medal winning team in the 1997 National Futures Tournament with the Dover Under-19 squad.

Personal: Born June 29, 1980 … Kateri is the daughter of Regina and Herb Simon … a two-time recipient of a Maryland community service award (1999 and 2000) and ACC community service award-winner in 1999 … biological resources engineering major.

Since coming to Maryland I’ve learned: there is a whole lot of learning to be done, and we’ll never know enough, but if we continue to seek knowledge and experiences we will always find ways to truly live.
