Maryland, American Advance in Field Hockey Invitational
College Park, MD--Maryland freshman forward Carla Tagliente and American University sophomore midfielder Eveline Van Der Grinten each recorded a hat trick, leading their field hockey teams to victory in the first round of the Terrapin Invitational.
Tagliente's three goals and two assists led the Terps (7-0) to a 10-0 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas (4-2). Van Der Grinten's three goals led the Eagles (2-3) to a 4-0 win over the Rhode Island Rams (0-5).
In remaining undefeated, Maryland also got two goals each from freshman back Marloes Platzek and freshman midfielder Keli Smith. Senior midfielder Christine DeBow, senior forward Lynsey McVicker and junior forward Kasey Heiser each added one goal.
In addition to Van Der Grinten's three-goal outburst, the Eagles also got a goal from sophomore midfielder Jessica Reed. Senior midfielder Virginia Casabo assisted on two of American's four goals.
Maryland and American will meet tomorrow in the championship game of the tournament at 3:00 P.M. Georgetown and Rhode Island will play in the consolation game, which starts at 1:00 P.M.
