J.J. Ferreira was named as Maryland gymnastics' assistant coach in the summer of 2010. Ferreira came to College Park after working at Springfield College from 2008 through the 2010 season.
"I am excited to welcome JJ to the staff here at Maryland. JJ brings a great deal of technical knowledge as well as spotting ability he's going to be a great asset to the team," Nelligan said.
"I have always wanted to know what it would be like to coach at a Division I institution, so I think the University of Maryland will be a great fit for me," Ferreira said. "When the opportunity arose for me to become an assistant coach at the University of Maryland, I was ecstatic. This is such a big opportunity for me. I'm looking forward to everything that Maryland has to offer, and to a great 2010-2011 season."
During his time in Springfield, the Pride was named a top ten team academic team in the country. The team finished top three in the Eastern College Athletic Conference and Ferreira was named the ECAC's Assistant Coach of the Year in the spring of 2010.
Ferreira also worked at the Unique Sports Academy in Waldorf, Md. for the last four years. He spent time with gymnasts in Levels 7, 8, 9 and 10. He also spent time at GJ Dance Studio and Saints Gymnastics in Waldorf and as an instructor with USA Gymnastics in Watertown, Mass.
Ferreira competed on Springfield's men's gymnastics team from 2004-2008 where he served as co-captain. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2006 and 2008 and was a USA Gymnastics Academic All-American. J.J. served as co-captain from 2006-2008.
Ferreira graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in Movement and Sports Studies and a minor in Health in 2008. He earned his master's of education from Springfield this past spring, with a concentration in athletic administration.
