COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Jackie Ciconte's goal with just over a minute left in the game gave the No. 3 Maryland field hockey team a 3-2 victory over ACC rival No. 15 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps even their record in conference play at 1-1 and improve to 11-1 on the season. The Cavaliers fall to 5-6 and drop their first conference title of the year.
As in most games this season, the Terrapins were dominant, outshooting UVA by a 24-5 margin. Cavalier goalkeeper Logan Carr, however, made 15 saves to keep the game close. Carr also faced 11 Maryland penalty corners while Virginia was awarded just two.
Maryland scored first on a freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) goal. In the 15th minute, Infante worked her way to the right side of the shooting circle and blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her first of two tallies.
Five minutes later, Virginia's first shot of the match came in the form of a Katie Jo Gerfen goal. Gerfen's shot deflected off a Maryland defender and sailed into the back of the net to tie the score, 1-1.
With the game tied, the Terps regained the lead, 2-1, less than a minute into the second half, as ACC goal leader Infante notched her 15th marker of the season.
But Virginia would not go away despite its lack of opportunities. With the clock winding down, Mia Link slapped in a rebounded shot to tie the game for the second time, 2-2. But the score would not remain like that for long. On the ensuing play, the Terps' Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) dribbled around the front of the net and knocked in the game winner at 68:54 to avoid the overtime.
Maryland hosts the Aeropostale ACC/Big Ten Challenge and closes out a nine-game homestretch against Ohio State on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on tape delay on College Sports Television on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.
