DURHAM, N.C. - Fourth-ranked Duke picked up its first ACC win of the year, defeating third-ranked Maryland, 3-1, at Williams Field in Durham, N.C., on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils also snap a seven-game losing streak to the Terps. Sophomore Amber McQuillan recorded UM's only goal of the game in the 67th minute.
The Terps drop just their second game of the year, falling to 12-2 and 1-2 in the ACC. Maryland's only other loss was a 3-1 setback to No. 1 Wake Forest. The Blue Devils improve to 10-2 and 1-2 in the conference.
Both teams battled back and forth until Duke's Katie Grant tallied the unassisted goal to break a scoreless tie at 23:59. The Blue Devils were not done, scoring a second goal with just over a minute left in the period to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Chrissie Murphy scored on a pass from Nicole Dudek.
Duke's goalkeeper Christy Morgan continued to deny the Terps a scoring opportunity while the Blue Devils added to its lead in the 60th minute on a Dudek tally.
In the final minutes, the Terps' McQuillan (Coopersburg, Pa.) broke up the shutout, scoring on a pass from freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile).
The Terps outshot the Blue Devils, 17-10, and each team was awarded just three penalty corners for the game, all coming in the second half.
Maryland is back at home for two games. The Terps battle with No. 7 Old Dominion for the second time this season. UM won the first meeting on Sept. 6, 2-1. Maryland will also honor the 1993 National Championship team during halftime.
