COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Tiffany Marsh led the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team to its 10th-consecutive win of the season, scoring two goals in the Terps' 3-1 win over Pennsylvania on Wednesday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland starts off the season at 10-0 for the third time in school history.
Maryland got on the board quickly, just 1:29 into the game, and took a 1-0 lead. Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) quickly made a pass into the circle from the restart and found senior Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) who stuck her stick out and deflected the ball into the net.
Marsh then found herself wide open on the right side and wound up for the shot. The ball hit off the goalkeeper and went into the net, putting the Terps in front, 2-0, at 20:44.
Penn (3-4), however, broke through a solid Maryland defense which had shutout its previous three opponents. On the Quakers' only shot attempt of the evening, Lea Salese knocked in a loose ball in front of the net to break up the shutout and come within 2-1 in the second half.
But Maryland tacked on another goal and pushed its lead back up as Marsh added her ninth of the season on a pass from freshman Susie Rowe (London, England).
The Terps peppered the Penn goalkeeper Liz Schlossberg, who made 10 saves on the evening, with 22 shots. Maryland has only allowed a combined five shots to its last four opponents.
No. 2 Maryland hosts the No. 1-ranked team in the nation and three-time defending NCAA Champion Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. for an important ACC matchup. The Terps have dropped the last six meetings in a row, dating back to 2002.
