Maryland's All-American attackerJoe Walters scored his 19th career hat trick, but it wasn't enough as the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils (4-0, 1-0 ACC) handed the No. 3 Maryland (1-1, 0-1 ACC) men's lacrosse team its first defeat of the season.

The Terps jumped on Duke in the first quarter, racing out to a 3-0 lead off goals by All-American Bill McGlone, Michael Phipps and Walters.

Duke came roaring back in the second period, scoring three goals in just over five minutes to tie the game at 3-3. The Terrapins retook the lead when Phipps and Walters each scored their second goals of the game to give Maryland a 5-3 lead with 2:36 remaining in the half. The Terps looked to be in good shape to add to their lead when Duke's Matt Zash picked up a slashing penalty at the 1:30 mark, but Blue Devil attackman Matt Danowski scored a man-down goal to cut the Maryland lead to 5-4 and give Duke the momentum heading into halftime.

Maryland appeared to stymie that momentum when Terrapin senior midfielder Andrew Schwartzman scored his second goal of the season to increase the Terps' lead to 6-4. But that would be the last lead Maryland would enjoy as Duke answered back with three straight goals to finish the third quarter with a 7-6 lead.

The Blue Devils extended their advantage with two more goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to go up 9-6. But All-American Brendan Healy and Walters answered back for the Terps with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 9-8.

But with less than two minutes remaining, Maryland goalie Harry Alford came out from the net to help pressure the ball, allowing Duke midfielder Kyle Dowd to score the insurance goal with 1:28 left in the game.

The Terps pressured the Blue Devil defense in the final minute and a half, but were unable to get a clean shot off on the Duke net.

Maryland takes to the road for the first time in 2005 next Saturday, March 12, at No. 11 Towson. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Unitas Stadium.
