FAIRFAX, Va.- - Hermann Trophy candidate Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) pitched in with a four-point effort for the Maryland (9-3) men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon to lift Maryland over George Mason (4-9-1) 3-1 in Fairfax, Va. Twellman had one goal, the game winner, and assisted on the other two for Maryland.

Twellman's game-winner came just 7:19 into the first period. Senior Jason Cropley (La Canada, Calif.) brought the ball down the right sideline, and carefully calculated the cross to Twellman on the left side of the goal. Cropley finally fired, placing the ball in perfect position to give Twellman the game-winning header from six yards out. The game-winner was Twellman's fifth of the year, and was his seventh goal overall.

The Terrapins then widened the margin when Twellman found Jason Sardis (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) on a cross from the deep left side of the net. Sardis then took the endline cross and made the deposit into the right side of the goal.

George Mason's Chris Villamil got one past starting goalkeeper Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) for the Patriots at 38:37 off a Laszlo Juhasz pass from the midfield. The goal was the Patriots first goal in 445 minutes, breaking a streak of 21-straight unanswered goals for the Patriots.

When Schmidt drew the starting nod in place of a banged-up Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) it broke a streak of 35-straight starts by Lewis in goal. Schmidt recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action to record his first collegiate win.

In another collegiate first, sophomore Nouf Tajini (Casablanca, Morocco) finished the scoring for the day with the first goal of his career. Previously, Tajini had been credited with three assists, but the goal was the first score of his Terrapin career. Twellman was given credit for the assist, making it his second assist of the game.

Neither team could find the net in the second half. Maryland outshot the Patriots 18-6 and did not allow George Mason a shot in the second half. Fouls were a lopsided 18-6, including a red card for the Patriot's Villamil at 78:21 after his second caution.

Maryland is in action again on Saturday against William & Mary for its second South-Atlantic Region match-up of the game. The Terps travel to Virginia Beach for their first away contest in the series against the Tribe, with the start time set for 7 p.m. and will be played at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
