COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The eighth-ranked Maryland Terrapins seized momentum with a late first half goal from Robbie Rogers and shut down the Virginia offense throughout the game to go on to a 3-0 win over the fourth-ranked Cavaliers Wednesday night at Ludwig Field.

Rogers, Stephen King and Jason Garey netted goals for the Terps while the back line of A.J. Delagarza, Kenney Bertz, Michael Dello-Russo and Chris Lancos held UVa to just eights shots on the game. Midfielders Spencer Allen, Maurice Edu and A.J. Godbolt helped to maintain possession for the Terps and limit any chances for the 'Hoos.

"What it does is it gives us a chance to contend for the conference title," head coach Sasho Cirovski as his team improved to 11-3-0 and 5-1-0 in the ACC. "We were sharp and focused and played well against a very good Virginia team."

The Terps grabbed the 1-0 lead late in the first half on Rogers' goal. Maurice Edu dribbled past the Cavalier defense on the left side and worked his way down to the corner of the box before sliding a centering pass. Rogers held off a Virginia defender just outside the six and got his foot on a shot that hit the far post before rolling across the line for the score.

"Any time you can get that first goal, it's huge," Cirovski said.

Maryland out-shot UVa in the first half, 6-3. The lone save in the half came when Yannick Reyering cleared an A.J. Godbolt header off the line.

The two teams played evenly for the first 15 minutes of the second half before things started to open up for both teams. Virginia had a solid scoring opportunity off a corner kick in the 61st minute, but Reyering missed the equalizer as his header sailed high.

The Terps took advantage just a minute later as Godbolt helped push Maryland's lead to two goals after slipping a well timed through ball to King who was making a run into the box. King took a dribble before getting the shot over UVa's Ryan Burke who was coming to challenge the ball.

Maryland sealed the victory with Garey's league-leading 14th goal of the year after Chris Lancos struck a free kick from 40 yards into the box. Garey was able to get a piece of the ball with a header that found found the back of the net.

The 'Hoos were held to eight shots in the game, and Maryland keeper Chris Seitz was forced to make just one save in the game.

The loss was Virginia's first in the league and dropped the team to 10-2-2 on the year (5-1-0 ACC). It was also the first loss for UVa in seven games and the first time it had been shut out since Sept. 21 vs. Old Dominion.

The Terps will continue ACC play this Saturday on the road at Boston College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
