GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Kendra Knight of the Maryland softball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Pitcher of the Week the league announced Tuesday. This is the third time this season Knight has earned the league's weekly honor.
Knight helped the Terps (29-19, 7-10) earn two ACC wins at North Carolina State in her two starts in the circle over the weekend. In her 14.0 innings of work, she did not give up a run. The N.C. State offense hit just .070 against her.
Knight started the second game of Saturday's doubleheader and gave up just two hits, three walks and recorded seven strikeouts. In Sunday's single game, she allowed one hit in 7.0 innings to the first Wolfpack batter of the game. She did not allow a walk and recorded six strikeouts on the day.
She is No. 5 in the league in ERA (1.47), No. 3 in opposing batting average (.171) and in the top ten in strikeouts (206).
The Maryland pitching staff of Knight and Kerry Hickey leads the ACC in team ERA (1.65). The unit is third in the league in opposing batting average (.189) and strikeouts (406). The Terrapin pitching staff has given up the fewest hits in the league (214), fewest runs (103), and earned runs (75).
The Terrapins return home this week for a midweek doubleheader Wednesday against Delaware State (23-14, 6-3). The first game will begin at 5 p.m. at Robert E. Taylor Stadium and the second game will follow.
The Terps invite all campers from the 2009 summer camps back to cheer on the team. Campers can sign in at the marketing table to stand with the team during the National Anthem. Glow sticks will be given to the first 200 fans in attendance, kids will have the chance to take pictures with Testudo who will be attending the games, and kids can attend the autograph session at the end of the doubleheader.
