RICHMOND, Va. - An unassisted goal by sophomore Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) at the 10-minute mark in a melee following a penalty corner proved to be the deciding factor as the top-ranked Maryland field hockey team (8-1, 0-1 ACC) blanked Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0. Second-year netminder Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) and the Terp defense put together a solid effort to post the Terps' fifth shutout of the season and give Maryland a 13-2 shot advantage.
Barbieri's goal came only 10 minutes into the game, following a Terrapin penalty corner opportunity. The direct shot was saved by Ram goaltender Abby Stiles, and then rebounded by Terp sophomore Emily Boyer (Oak Park, Ill.), who smacked it toward the cage. A Ram defender got a stick on the ball and deflected it into the air toward the post, where Barbieri was waiting to bat it in.
The Rams' best chance to score came on a penalty corner opportunity in the first half, but Hearsey was there to deny Nicole Sullivan's drag flick attempt.
Both teams battled to gain momentum in the second half, and the Terrapins had several chances, including a valiant flurry by freshman Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) that was stopped by Stiles (nine saves). Hearsey made the second of her two saves of the game to again turn away a Sullivan attack and keep the Rams off the scoreboard.
"I think we obviously could have finished more -- the ball was in scoring position," said the Terps' four-time national coach of the year Missy Meharg. "But all in all, I think we have to give ourselves tremendous credit for our mental fortitude... We've been through a lot, and I'm really proud of the team for how they've handled the three away games in the five days of this road trip."
The Terrapins have four days of practice and recuperation before continuing their four-game road swing on Friday with a match against No. 17 Princeton at 7 p.m.
